How it works

From recording to bass tab

An MP3 is dropped in, the bass, lead guitar and rhythm guitar parts are written out as tab beside the audio, and the lead part then plays on NoteNav's note highway.

The whole band

Bass first, with the guitars alongside

The bass tab is the one you came for. The lead and rhythm guitar tabs are built from the same upload, which helps when you're working out how the parts fit together.

Bass

4 strings
GDAE55753353

The low end on its own staff: four strings, tuned the way you play, with the line written out note for note.

Lead Guitar

6 strings
eBGDAE57585885

Melodies, fills and solos: the single-note line that sits on top of the mix, with the fret positions to play it.

Guitar solos to tabs

Rhythm Guitar

6 strings
eBGDAE5757575735353535

The chords and riffs underneath: the part that carries the song, kept apart from the lead so neither clutters the other.

Why bass is hard by ear

Hear the bass line under a loud mix

Bass is the part that disappears on laptop speakers and the part people most often get wrong by ear. NoteNav writes it out note for note, so you're not guessing at what's under the kick drum and the guitars.

The tab is written for four-string bass in the tuning you choose, from E Standard and Drop D down to B Standard.

Getting a better bass tab

  • Start from the clearest recording you have. The cleaner the source, the cleaner the tab.
  • Set the bass tuning before you build. A drop tuning changes which string each note lands on.
  • Fill in the title and artist to get a suggested tuning.
  • The bass on its own staff

The bass line gets its own tab, apart from the guitar parts, so every note on the staff is one you play.

  • Drop and down tunings

Choose from 36 presets for four-string bass, including Drop D, Eb Standard, D Standard and C Standard.

  • Bass on the highway

Play the line on the note highway at 25% to 150% speed, with an A/B loop for the bar that trips you up.

  • Plug in and get scored

Connect your bass through an audio interface or use a mic. Each run ends with a score and your best.

FAQ

Bass tab questions

More answers on the FAQ page, or email [email protected].

How accurate are the tabs?

Accurate enough to play straight from. NoteNav writes every part note for note, in playable positions for your tuning and capo, and the tab follows the original recording so you can hear each bar against what you're reading. The first 90 seconds of every song are free, so try it on a song you know and compare it with anything else you've tried.

Can NoteNav make bass tabs from an MP3?

Yes. Upload the MP3 and NoteNav writes a bass tab alongside the guitar tabs. It works on full mixes, not just bass-only recordings.

Does it support five-string bass?

Not yet. Bass tabs are written for four strings. If the song sits low, choose a lower tuning such as B Standard.

Can I play the bass tab along with the song?

Yes. The tab player follows the original recording, and the note highway can listen to your bass through a mic or audio interface and score the run.

What if the song has no bass?

NoteNav skips any part it can't find and still builds the others. The track page tells you which parts were skipped.

Can I export the bass tab?

Yes. The Guitar Pro 7 export puts bass, lead and rhythm on separate tracks in one .gp file.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. Every new track starts with a free preview of the first 90 seconds, tabbed and playable against the recording. A full song costs 10 credits.
